How to replace a garage door spring
Just like fixing garage door cables, replacing an old torsion spring can be a dangerous job that requires a great deal of prior knowledge. It’s very easy to get wrong, which will only end up with you a) buying a new door, or b) paying someone to fix it. To save yourself the headache, we would recommend calling in a local, knowledgeable professional to fix your door.
How to fix a garage door cable
Fixing a garage door cable is a very difficult job, and can even be dangerous if you’re not sure what you’re doing. If you’re not 100% with how garage doors work mechanically, we would recommend calling the professionals here at Associated Garage Doors to fix your issue. We will be able to repair your door swiftly and safely and at a reasonable price.
How to seal a garage door
Your garage door should come with a weather seal but it will eventually wear away over time. It’s a long strip made of rubber or vinyl that attaches to the bottom of the door. The material compresses when the door closes, sealing the gap along the floor to keep out water, dirt, cold winds and insects. You’ll know when you need to replace the seal, as you’ll be able to see daylight under the door when it’s closed.
If for some reason your garage door doesn’t have a weather seal, or you would like to bolster it with something else, you can use a threshold seal which runs along the floor as opposed to the door.
How wide is a double garage door?
Your typical double garage door will be between 14 and 16 feet wide. For maximum comfort when parking, we would recommend opting for the extra space, especially with the growth in popularity for larger vehicles, such as 4x4s and people carriers.
How big is a single garage door?
Your typical single garage door will be 7 feet wide and 7 feet high, although you will find some single garage doors that are a little bigger and smaller than this. We wouldn’t recommend going smaller, unless you are really strapped for room.
How big is a standard garage door?
Given that garage doors can be referred to in both metric and imperial measurements, it can be a little confusing. In the UK, many of the sizes we refer to as ‘standard’ are actually close imperial sizes that have been rounded. This is why ordering sizes sometimes don’t actually represent the overall width and height of the relevant garage door, when including the operating mechanism and sub-frame.
So while there might be a ‘standard size’, make sure you understand exactly what that size is referring to.
How to open a stuck garage door
Your garage door could be stuck for any number of reasons, so it’s best not to jump to any conclusions. Whether it’s a broken spring, a faulty emergency release or a simple obstruction, the sheer force method probably won’t solve the issue and could end up damaging your garage door, so we would recommend, to be on the safe side, calling in a professional to take a look at it.
How to insulate a garage door
There are DIY methods that you can use to insulate your garage door, for example, by lining your door with foam board insulation and securing it in place. However, such methods are easy to get wrong and you could end up wasting both time and money.
Instead, we would recommend opting for an insulated roller garage door. While this might cost you more money up front, the money you will save in the long run on heating bills will more than make up for it.
How to secure a garage door
If you want to keep your garage door secure, you could consider locking door bolts. They come in kits that consist of a couple of locking mechanisms and keys that fit at either side of the bottom of your garage door which keep the frame nice and secure. The bolts are compatible with most styles of garage door, but are best suited to up-and-over styles.
